A while back I received a call from a Shurrell about meeting to discuss her wedding. As we were coordinating our schedules, she said that her and her family had just moved to Radford Dr. in Highland Heights, which is where I live. I was wondering who bought the house across the street. Anna said “Oh my gosh – we never took them cookies.”
When I met with Shurrell and Brandon, I knew we were going to work great together. They were so easy going and excited about photography, which always motivates me.
We shot their engagement session in two locations. The first was at Jillian’s in Cleveland Heights – and the second was at Mentor Headlands.
Jillian’s is significant to Shurrell and Brandon because it’s where they had their first date. I shot a Bar Mitzvah there last May and knew we were going to get some great shots because it’s so colorful and contrasty. We spent most of the time around the pool table, and a few minutes in the back room by the sofas. Shurrell and Brandon were naturals. They didn’t need any time to get warmed up. We just started shooting, and right away we were getting tons of keepers.
By the time we got to the beach, the sun was almost gone. It was just starting to touch the horizon, which left us plenty of time to capture some great sunset shots.
We shot at the beach until it was too dark to see. There was a ranger who announced the beach was closed, but unfortunately, he didn’t mention anything about locking up the only exit. In order to escape the park, we had to do a little off-roading.
I had a great time shooting with Shurrell and Brandon, and I’m really looking forward to their wedding next year.
Here’s a few from the shoot.

Because Shurrell is a nurse and Brandon is a doctor, they wanted to incorporate a medical angle into the shoot. Great idea! As long as there are no scalpels or needles! Luckily, they just brought their stethoscopes, which was a really cute idea.
